India’s vast and bustling capital, along with Jaipur and Agra, forms the famous Golden Triangle, one of the most enduring travel destinations worldwide. In Delhi, you will discover the beating heart of India: astonishing monuments in the most unexpected corners, wonderful museums, gardens everywhere, and a very vibrant art scene. Last but not least, Delhi is a gastro-blogger’s delight; you can find amazing food in the most unexpected places (and yes, if you are an experienced traveler, you dare to eat outside the hotel). Like many cities with history, there is a distinct Old City. You can spend half a day in the noisy, dusty, but super charming Old Delhi and in the evening enjoy a drink at one of New Delhi’s aristocratic bars. Enclosed by remnants of ancient walls, Old Delhi bears the marks of Mughal aesthetics everywhere: the emperors of the dynasty were descendants of the Timurids and Genghis Khan, which means Islamic influences are strong in every cultural expression. Here you will encounter some of the “archetypal” images you inevitably have in mind for India. Medieval bazaars, palatial architectural jewels, mosques, temples, and shrines form a dense urban fabric aptly described as the “microcosm of India”. New Delhi, in contrast, is a new city designed on paper by leading architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker: the foundation stone was laid as recently as 1911 by the then royal couple of England. From the commercial hub of Connaught Place to the buildings of imperial architecture and the India Gate, New Delhi presents the image of a dynamic metropolis that knows how to flirt with both tradition and high-tech.
